 | KYNP Guest Speaker wins Masterchef Great Britain Young Chef of the Year, 2010.A CHEF from Nenthead, Tom Orton (21) who demonstrated his culinary skills to the Know your North Pennine students in March 2010, has been named Great Britain Young Chef of the Year. In charge of the kitchens at the Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel near Alston, Tom is now off to study in America. He was one of eight finalists battling for the inaugural title of Masterchef of Great Britain’s Young Chef of the Year at a cook-off at Westminster Kingsway College, London. The contestants had to prepare a signature starter and main course, one of which had to be a classic dish, from a mystery box of ingredients which were revealed the night before the event. Tom, who is from Nenthead, cooked pan-fried scallops with lemon sole goujons, asparagus carpaccio with garlic puree and chorizo oil, followed by pan-fried duck breast with celeriac puree and a wild mushroom and tarragon cannelloni with Madeira jus. As part of his prize, he has won a trip to study at The Culinary Academy which is part of The Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
